2021 Waldgries Sudtiroler Lagrein
As gorgeous a rendition of Lagrein as you’ll have experienced and a teaching wine for the variety and its charms.
From the sandy, granitic soils of Santa Maddalena to the northeast of Bolzano, this gets a medium (2-3 week) maceration, 50% of it whole bunch, but in large oak and used barriques only, so it expresses itself entirely as Lagrein. The blue-purple colour describes fruits of cherry and plum, with similar quite juicy flavours kept up and nervy by a minerality. Some really fascinating extra aromatics are playing in, over and under, almond and rosemary.
This has an excellent intensity and with its extra aromatics and flesh is not as tight-shouldered and ‘cold’ as Lagrein can be. This will be a repeat on your table and has a broad application and a cooperative nature similar to Chianti, Barbera and Valpolicella eg. A very strong advertisement for Lagrein.
