2021 Boasso Langhe Nebbiolo

The Boasso family collection of Serralunga vineyards reads pretty well. All wines come from a series of plots in either Gabutti itself, where home is, and 10 contiguous plots adjoin the Cappellano holdings, from Margheria, where two plots lie immediately below Massolino’s, or from Meriame, Le Turne and Cerrati, which provide some Nebbiolo, but are mostly the source of the brilliant Dolcetto, Barbera and the delicious Moscato.

These are tannic; there’s no other way to put it. If you want to show what traditionally made, flawless and totally terroir-driven Serralunga looks, smells and feels like, these are it. They do take a bit of air to crack open, but the rewards are probably precisely what you imagine of the ideal Serralunga. Graphite, smoke, maybe some darker cherry, porcini, liquorice and pepper. Black tea tannins and up-acidity see the wines out.

After a gentle 15 days of maceration, the wine matured in large Slavonian oak casks (25 hL) for 6 months.

2019 Giovanni Sordo Barbaresco

Since the early 20th century, generations of the Sordo family have been quietly collecting parcels of the finest Nebbiolo-growing soil in the Langhe. They now have numerous plots of vines in Roero, Barbaresco and particularly Barolo.

During processing, the grapes undergo gentle crushing and destemming, followed by a long submerged-cap maceration, the duration of which varies based on the vintage. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. After six months of maturation in these vats, the wine ages for a further 12 months in large Slavonian oak barrels.

A fresh and delightful Barbaresco that opens with incense, rose petals and spices. Finely knit and tangy on the medium-bodied palate. Round and attractive on the finish - James Suckling

2019 Barale Barolo del Comune di Barolo

The Barale family have been at it for centuries. While they are amongst the first recorded producers of Barolo wine, from 1870, they appear in the village register of the early 1600s as owners of parts of some pretty familiar vineyard names; Coste di Rose, Cannubi, Castellero and Preda. The current custodians, Sergio Barale and his daughters Eleonora and Gloria owe their heritage to the acquisition, over generations, of vineyards in not only Barolo comune, but also in Monforte d’Alba and Barbaresco.

The fruit for this wine comes from Castellero, Preda and Coste di Rose in the Commune of Barolo. In the winery; delicate crushing in order to keep skins intact, fermentation with indigenous yeasts, 40 days of maceration. Aged for three years in French oak.
