2022 Boasso Dolcetto d'Alba
The Boasso family collection of Serralunga vineyards reads pretty well. All wines come from a series of plots in either Gabutti itself, where home is, and 10 contiguous plots adjoin the Cappellano holdings, from Margheria, where two plots lie immediately below Massolino’s, or from Meriame, Le Turne and Cerrati, which provide some Nebbiolo, but are mostly the source of the brilliant Dolcetto, Barbera and the delicious Moscato.
These are tannic; there’s no other way to put it. If you want to show what traditionally made, flawless and totally terroir-driven Serralunga looks, smells and feels like, these are it. They do take a bit of air to crack open, but the rewards are probably exactly what you imagine of the ideal Serralunga. Graphite, smoke, maybe some darker cherry, porcini, liquorice and pepper. Black tea tannins and up-acidity see the wines out.
After 8-10 days in steel to ferment, the Dolcetto spends another 4 months in steel before bottling.
2020 Giovanni Sordo Barbera d'Alba
Sordo HQ is nestled in the corner of Castiglione Falletto comune on the last stretch of the Alba-Barolo road before it takes that left fork up to Barolo village. You take this track (Frazione Garbelletto) just to the left for Paolo Scavino and Azelia, or right another 100 metres for the entrance to the Sordo family’s quite spectacular and beautiful new cellar. While the sheer impact and architectural quality of this new facility is eye-catching, it’s the wines that demand the most attention. For sheer consistent excellence of this number of wines, made in an essentially traditional and unforced style, it is impossible not to take note of the wines of Giovanni Sordo.
Pretty color in the glass and floral aromas of fresh plum, blackberry, hibiscus and ash. Medium body with intense fresh flavors, turning salty on the finish. Nicely done. - James Suckling
2021 Marchesi Di Gresy Langhe Nebbiolo
The wines of the Marchesi di Gresy are some of the most beautiful you will experience. The Nebbiolo of their famed Monopole Matinenga, produces wines of incredible colour, perfumes, intensity and elegance. The di Gresy family have been in Barbaresco for centuries. They record taking ownership of the Monte Aribaldo property in Treiso comune in 1650 and in 1797 they were gifted Martinenga itself, site of the first Roman settlement in the area, known then as Villa Martis. Yet the family only started to vinify from this famous property for themselves in the 1970’s.
Fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, 6 to 7 day maceration before being aged in cement for 5 months. Brief ageing in the bottle before release.
